"K3.5: Herschel Strikes Back" or, "Gray's been kidnapped!"

date: 7/14/01

This was the first Kahunahhunt that I personally got to participate in, and it was also the first one that I didn't have a hand in planning. I would like to publicly thank Team Herschel for all their efforts in compiling a great hunt.

Kahunahhunt 3.5 began with a ransom note, telling us that Gray had been kidnapped, his parents had refused to pay the ramsom, and now it was up to us. I thought these invitations were a sign of great promise when I got them, and whoever thought of this should be applauded.

After following the ramsom notes instructions, the teams met at Bridget's house to watch the video of Grey tied up, and being tortured. (much funnier than it sounds) we were then given a list of seven clues, which led us to various locations around the city, where there were Kahunahclues waiting for us. Each clue was a flyer with a number and letter on it. After getting all the clues together (a task in and of itself, as some were on opposite ends of the city) It was up to us to decide what to do with them.

This is the part that stumped most people.

To decipher the clues, you had to add up the numbers, giving you a phone number that gave you further instructions. When arriving at the address indicated, you got a sock puppet, and another address, with a secret knock for entry. Now, it should be said at this point that many of us were tired, frustrated, and annoyed that this was taking so long, so when we got to the address we were iritable for the most part, and not exactly in the spirit of the whole thing. some of us reacted badly to the taunts of Rich and Neil, who eventually gave us a envelope with the S.A.T. inside. (scavenger aptitude test)

With the S.A.T., there was a list of photos that the kidnappers wanted us to take (the most clever being to re-create a beatles album cover) and a few more instructions that led you to Cooter browns, which was the finish line.

Team angie's (my team) memorable moments

Greatest moment of panic:
After thinking that we had a good ten minutes on the next team, seeing team sherry squared enter Barnes and noble as we were leaving. Then watching Angie, Donald and Kristin take off like a bat out of hell for the car, leaving me behind to try not to have a heart attack.

Favorite sly moment:
After finding the mural at laser tag, and not tipping off team sherry squared that we had, by signaling Donald with "SWAT" style hand gestures.

Most horrifying statement:
After seeing the Alice in wonderland clue, me saying, "we should call Jace!” followed by "Shit! He's dead! Of all the times for him to be dead!"

Most laughable duck face:
The elated/horrified look on his face when he realized that while his favorite team member would be getting naked in his apartment, so would I.

Best clue:
The anagram "ambler labs" for Marble slab, followed by the formula for a cone.

Best downing of another team:
After finding out that none of the other teams had gotten to marble slab yet, Drew saying "what they need on their teams are a few more engineers!"

Strangest reactions to a scavenger hunt item:
Angie saying "where the hell are we gonna get the 5 pillars of Islam?", and her and Donald being the only ones who realized that they weren't actual physical objects.

Most well adjusted servants of the proletariat:
Laser tag

Least well adjusted servants of the proletariat:
Tower records

Best moment of glory:
At the halfway point, not putting up with Neil and Rich’s crap. (By just snatching the clues from them and running like hell.)

Moment of greatest infuriation:
Becky telling me there was no penalty for tech support, and that team Crack Monkey was three clues ahead as a result.

Most amazing moment:
Our fearless leader getting us through the burger king drive thru in less than three minutes.

Most Oddly Gratifying Moment:
Knowing that if we were going to lose, it would be to Team Jeff, not to Team Crack cheaterMonkey.

All in all, a great time was had by our team. Good job guys!

The following is Lauren's (the leader of team Herschel) assessment of the hunt, and highlights:

the winning teams:
Team Jeff (Jeff, Becky, Nancy): 442.5 points
Team Angie (Angie, Rob, Duck, Kristin): 422.5 points
Team Sherry Squared (Sherry, Sherry, Charity): 275 points
Team Crack Monkey (Jason, Shaler, Oscar, Mike V.): 240 points

Highlights:

Most Daring: Team Angie for managing to get not one, but TWO of their teammates nekkid for the photo with the puppet. Note to Angie: If that photo been in any medium other than polaroid, and if it hadn't also featured a sock puppet, it would have been considered art. I'm dead serious.

Most Dedicated: Team Jeff had almost every item on the list except the wonka bar. Also kudos for their brilliant re-enactment of Britney Spears' "Oops, I Did It Again" video, featuring Nancy as Britney.

Most brain power: Team Angie for Duck's amazing ability to recite the 5 Pillars of Islam from memory! Impressive skills!

Most exasperated: Team Sherry Squared. They looked about ready to murder someone when Neil threw their part II off the balcony. A sincere apology: I had no idea the first half would drag out so long and be so frustrating.

Fastest Team: Team Sherry Squared, for reaching the finish line first.

Dumbest answer to a tech support question: I don't know which team it was who called in, but when Andy asked them to name a Jimi Hendrix song that was written by Bob Dylan, they answered "Stairway To Heaven." Doh!

Most original idea for a Beatles Album Cover: Team Angie for recreating the Blue Album. I expected the White Album and Abbey Road, but the balcony shot was good thinking.

Most Serendipitous happenstance: Team Corset who thought the Barnes & Noble clue was for Cooter Brown's, which happened to be the final location.

Most Curious Coincidence regarding a clue: Team Crack Monkey, who thought that the Alice In Wonderland quote about one side making you grow bigger, and the other making you smaller referred to a shop called "Through the Looking Glass" on Veterans Blvd., whose neighbors are a big & tall shop on one side, and a pediatrics clinic on the other. Whooo. Spooky!

I hope everybody had fun (Andy and I sure enjoyed watching you guys scurry like ants at B&N), I'm sorry it ran so long, and I'm boycotting Tower Records from now on, cuz they're dicks. Three cheers for the employees of Laser Tag for creating some 3rd party improvisation.
